This whole affair is beginning to sound like a movie plot. Suspiciously like Wag the Dog.

Like all political scandals, there must be a name ending in Gate to describe the event.

9/14/98 - With the merge of Presidential Politics,
Entertainment, and the Justice System, imagine the OJ
Simpson trial crossed with Staingate. The whole case might
be thrown out because The Cigar didn't fit! (and was
it a Cuban cigar?)
9/18/98 - This whole affair reaches incredible lunacy with
the announcement that the video
of President Clinton's testimony will be released. The
rationale is that the public will be able to witness his
reaction to questions. Pity that we didn't have the same
opportunity to see the other witnesses testimony. And, why
didn't Clinton anticipate this scenario, and testify (not taped) in
person? Perhaps he did anticipate this, and considered the
release of the tape to be an
advantage for him...

Thankyou to Salon Magazine for
breaking the story about hypocritical
Henry Hyde, the head of the House Judiciary Committee. This article caused
quite a
furore in media circles, resulting in the firing of Salon's Washington
bureau chief who
publicly criticized releasing the story.
In a follow up
article it appears that Henry wasn't quite honest in his explanation of the
affair. In summary, Hyde Lied. But as he explains, it doesn't matter, as it
was a youthful indiscretion (he was 42) that happened a long time ago.

10/1/98 NPR commentator Richard Rosenfeld has a great
historical perspective to show that the founding fathers
never intended personal matters to be grounds for
impeachment. High Crimes and Misdemeanors does not
mean inappropriate behavior with an intern.
10/2/98 The House Judiciary Committee released
4,000 pages of testimony. The additional 56,000 pages were
not released for reasons of sexual explicitness, national
security and individual privacy (what about Clinton's
individual privacy?)
